CoinGecko gives a number from 1 to 10. It summarises how deep the order books are, how plausible the reported trading is against observed traffic, and how regularly the exchange supplies data. A high score does not mean "safe" and a low one does not mean "fraud" — it says how well the exchange's own claims can be checked from outside. That is less than one would like, and more than nothing.
Volume is not a seal of quality: several of the largest venues of recent years no longer exist, and their customers ended up in the insolvency estate. Three questions matter more. Where is the operator based, and which supervision applies there? Can euros be deposited and withdrawn directly, or only by a detour? And what does withdrawing to your own wallet cost? Anyone who buys and leaves it there does not hold coins but a claim against a company.
