What hashprice means

Hashprice is what one terahash of computing power earns per day before anything is deducted. It falls when difficulty rises and it rises when the price rises. For a machine the sum is simple: hashrate times hashprice gives the daily earnings, and the power bill comes off that. Which is why it is the one number that values every machine at once.

Why difficulty moves everything

Every 2,016 blocks, so roughly every two weeks, the network resets difficulty so that a block again takes ten minutes on average. If more computing power joins, difficulty rises and every individual machine gets less, without anything about it having changed. That is exactly what turns any multi-year payback calculation into an estimate.

What that means for a particular machine is what the miner comparison works out.
